Joint Retirement in Couples: Evidence of Complementarity in Leisure*

In this paper, I examine leisure complementarities in the joint retirement decisions of couples by quantifying effect 2011 Norwegian pension reform. The reform abolished an earnings test on early benefits for private-sector workers, but not public-sector workers. analyze population-wide registry data labor market participation, and consider where focal partner works public sector with a spouse employed either private (treatment group) or (control group). find that spousal spillovers account over 40 percent aggregate employment women. They claim fewer benefits, both men women pay additional income taxes. total, government budgets improved approximately $46 million as result spillover between 2012 2015.
